The Westwood Child Development Center is located in Southwest Denver.  The existing facility was undersized for both the toddler and K-12 children it was serving.  As a part of the City and County of Denver Bond program the facility was expanded and the play areas for both age groups was remodeled.  The operator, Mile High Montessori asked that the remodeling of the play areas be an extention of  the class rooms as well as incorporate a more natural environment.  The existing play areas included the traditional play equipment and pea gravel safety surfaces leaving little room for imagination and exploration by the children.   The revamped playground utilized soil from the building construction to create changes in elevation and small hills for viewing,  a garden was constructed for planting by the children, small decks created for gathering and “performing” and circular walks for 3 wheelers and people.
